TELLING THE BEES
For his entry in the Great Beehive Exhibit 1981, Bob chose the folk practice of “Telling the Bees”. This custom of announcing the death of the family patriarch to the bees in order to prevent them from leaving, is mentioned in numerous literary references, and involves many variations such as bringing a portion of the funeral dinner to the hive. In developing this print, Bob researched many funeral customs, and depicts the drapery from Lincoln’s catafalque as part of the image. MJK
